Essential Gear & Ingredients
Before you begin, safety is key. Because you’ll be working with sodium hydroxide (lye), always wear gloves, goggles, and long sleeves.
The Oils: A blend of Coconut Oil (for lather), Olive Oil (for moisture), and Shea Butter (for creaminess).
The Lye Solution: Sodium Hydroxide flakes mixed with distilled water.
The Scent: Pure essential oils like Lavender or Eucalyptus.
Tools: A digital scale, a stainless steel pot, a heat-safe plastic pitcher, and a stick blender (immersion blender).
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Mix the Lye Water
Carefully pour your lye flakes into your distilled water (never the other way around!). Stir until dissolved. The mixture will become very hot and cloudy; set it aside in a safe place to cool.
2. Prep Your Oils
Weigh your solid fats (like coconut oil) and melt them over low heat. Once melted, add your liquid oils (like olive oil). Aim for your oils and lye water to both be between 95°F and 110°F (35°C and 45°C) before mixing.
3. The Emulsion (Reaching "Trace")
Slowly pour the lye water into the oils. Use your stick blender to pulse and stir. You are looking for “trace”—this is when the mixture thickens to a pudding-like consistency, and a drizzle of soap leaves a visible trail on the surface.
4. Scent and Pour
Stir in your essential oils by hand. Pour the soap batter into your mold, smoothing the top with a spatula. Tap the mold on the counter to release any trapped air bubbles.
5. The Wait (Saponification)
Cover your mold and let it sit for 24 to 48 hours. During this time, the oils and lye undergo a chemical reaction called saponification, turning into soap!
6. Cut and Cure
Once firm, unmold your soap and cut it into bars. Now comes the hardest part: curing. Place your bars in a well-ventilated area for 4 to 6 weeks. This allows the water to evaporate, resulting in a harder, longer-lasting, and gentler bar.
